For new mom, Britt, finding a shampoo and conditioner is pretty tough, especially
those that contain all-natural and gluten-free ingredients.
“I had pretty much given up on gluten-free, paraben-free, sulfate-free, bad stuff-
free products because they either stripped my hair of color, ruined my ends or
weighted it down with so much product that it felt heavy and was tough to style,”says Britt.
Thankfully, however, she’s found a new shampoo and conditioner from Yellow
Strawberry’s all-natural, chemical- and gluten-free hair care products – found
exclusively at the salons’ three locations in Sarasota and Manatee Counties.
“I do my best to avoid gluten because of an autoimmune challenge I have, but
who wants to give up great hair, too?” says Britt. “Thankfully, Yellow Strawberry’s
gluten-free shampoo and conditioner is different. It has made my hair feel clean,
a breeze to brush through and easy to style, all with increased confidence that
the product I’m putting on my head is safe.”
Yellow Strawberry is one of only 50 salons in the country to carry this formula,
which is also free of parabens, preservatives and salt and not tested on animals.
The private product line, which the salon has carried for eight years, has been
tested to substantially improve shine, humidity resistance, hold, moisture
retention for smoothness and manageability. These highly concentrated formulas
also put less strain on the environment due to its natural product base. Some are
even 100-percent vegan-based products.
“Yellow Strawberry’s product line is free of the harmful chemicals you’ll find in
most hair care products, including petrochemicals, sulfates, ether and acetone,”
says Richard Weintraub, co-owner and master stylist of over 35 years, who
helped develop the new formulas for the salon.
Not only do the formulas make your hair feel and look incredible, they also smell
“When I was washing my hair, my husband said, ‘Hmm that smells like
strawberries.’ I said – funny, it’s from a salon called Yellow Strawberry!” reveals
The boutique salon recently added a couple new additions to its full private-label
product lineup. Spurred by client interest and current trends, Yellow Strawberry
now sells Making Waves Beach Spray, Intense Anti-Frizz Conditioner and Co
Wash, a non-lathering crème cleanser. These three products, which join the
salon’s 29 other products in the line, retail for $18 each.
The salon’s most popular product is Elixir 11, an anti-aging healthy hair treatment
for $18. The mist is formulated to seal color, smooth frizz, repair damage,
moisturize dry hair, strengthen fragile hair, improve texture and manageability,
add shine, softness and silkiness and prevent split ends, flat iron, pool and sun
“Our products are formulated to penetrate the hair and tackle the concerns
associated with Florida’s environment, which has high humidity, tons of direct
sunshine and chlorinated water,” Richard says. “For example, when you cut
yourself, do you want to use Neosporin ® or a Band-Aid ® on your cut? Most people
put a Band-Aid on their hair that just sits there, not a product like Neosporin,
which actually penetrates.”
All finishing products also contain sunscreen to further minimize hair damage
from sun and heat. Yellow Strawberry offers a 15-day money back guarantee on
its products and services. For more information, call 941-924- 1311, 941-377-

“You’ve got to inspire your clients,” said Erin Armstrong, director of education and Bumble.Live educator for Be.Creative House with Bumble and bumble. “I want to show you hair in a new way or remind you of a way you may have forgotten. My goal is to make you feel inspired, ” she said to a room full of 25 Yellow Strawberry stylists.
Erin has worked with Bumble and bumble for over 10 years and also works at her salon – Topaz – in Austin, Texas. She’s a huge part of their fashion week team and works on shows like Thom Brown and Tanya Taylor.
She recently taught the daylong class at one of the Yellow Strawberry salons. The session focused on men’s precision haircutting and a women’s razor cut.
“We are helpful people,” said Erin. “We aim to please as hair stylists.”
The day began with a video about Bumble and bumble and a discussion on several before-and-after photos. Erin and the stylists discussed the potential products used and the styling techniques behind each and how it affected the client’s face. Whether it was a change in length, texture or density, the goal was to make a transformation for the client.
“A transformation can also be helping a client to style their hair in a different way,” said Erin, which is what she helped do with hair model Juliana – who hadn’t had her hair cut in two years. She wanted a new style with side bangs and a cut.
Erin and the Yellow Strawberry stylists talked about where to best part her hair and worked with her natural part. The consensus was to give her something a bit more rock and roll with structure and strength, bringing her length up about four to five inches.
Erin and the stylists also talked about each product in the Bumble line, which are available in the Yellow Strawberry salons. The brand’s prepping tonic is used on colored hair that needs a little more moisture and softening.
The Thickening Hair Spray can be used to add hold, memory and control for anyone who wants a heat-styled strong look with structure. Right after a blow dry, The Thickening Creme Contour is great for styles that don’t want to look perfect for a more piecey look.
The stylists watched as Erin went to work on Juliana’s hair. The result was a beautifully layered cut with side-swept bangs. Next up – the stylists saw and heard about men’s precision cutting and various techniques to refine their skills.
“This is another great example of the cutting-edge training we provide our stylists,” said Richard Weintraub, co-owner of Yellow Strawberry. “Trends fluctuate, but these precision-cutting techniques will remain relevant and timeless. These methods help our stylists develop the eye they need for flawless shapes and cuts.”Read More
How often do YOU wash your hair? Some of us are everydayers, twice a weekers and then there’s some of us that should possibly wash our hair a bit more than we currently do. (I may or may not fall into the last category….)
Nonetheless, this sparks the question of, what IS best for your hair??
According to the hair gods, they recommend about 3 times a week. Always apply and work shampoo at the scalp, while keeping your conditioner on the ends. This will help your ends stay conditioned, and your scalp happy!
If you have highlighted or processed hair, try to wash your hair even less! Take advantage of the wonderful existence of dry shampoos and also remember to take care of your ends with the right conditioner (we recommend these) and regular hair trims.
For those of you with oily scalps, DO NOT over-shampoo your hair! By shampooing too often, our scalps will actually end up overcompensating by producing more oils than it should, resulting in an oily scalp.
Remember, changing your shampoo regimen takes about a week or so for your scalp to get used to so be patient! And dry shampoo is your BEST friend.
And now, without shame, we decided to ask some of our stylists how many days they go without shampooing.
Happy Hair Days,

Only found in salons, spas and doctor’s offices, Yellow Strawberry, a boutique salon in Sarasota and Manatee counties, is one of the few locations in the area to carry Jane Iredale. The salons’ three sites have been carrying the product line for two years. Laura Halasz, one of the salon’s three makeup artists, expertly applies the brand’s line to clients weekly. In addition, Laura also offers services like eyelash and eyebrow tinting, eyelash extensions.
“The line’s best sellers are Smooth Affair, a facial primer and brightener, and the pressed powder,” says Laura. “The pressed and loose powders are also great for people with acne because it pulls toxins out of the skin.”
The salon offers Laura’s expertise and makeup skills for lessons for $65 per hour. The one-on-one time with Laura is definitely worth its weight in gold. Here are some of her tips:
- The pressed and loose powders and the BB cream can be used as a concealer to cover dark circles.
- For less waste, apply the foundation directly on the skin or makeup brush to get the best and most use from it.
- For applying foundation, tap the brush or sponge into the foundation and roll it across the skin for more coverage.
“The line’s BB cream, which retails for $48, is a full-coverage foundation that we use a lot for weddings,” says Laura. “It has SPF 25 and protects against UVA and UVB rays. You don’t need a lot. Less is always more.”

Last Sunday we hosted our 2nd annual cut-a-thon event to benefit Oak Park School, the school for special needs in the Sarasota County School district that serves students close to 300 students from prekindergarten to age 22.
During the all-day event, 28 of our stylists donated their time to give haircuts for free, and participants were encouraged to make a donation of $20. The salon raised $3,000 and gave 46 haircuts throughout the day.
“We are extremely grateful for this partnership with Yellow Strawberry,” says Edwina Oliver, principal of Oak Park School. “This event helps us enhance additional events for our staff and initiatives for students that our normal district funding could not normally support. It helps us meet those needs in a fun and loving way and allows our families to come together.”
We’ve all done it – you see your favorite celebrity showing off a new do on Instagram, save the photo to your phone and march on down to your hair stylist and say, “I want this.” This can be stressful for most hair stylists since celebrities clearly have access to the best of everything and usually sport very new and trend-setting styles.
“That is precisely why training and making sure our team is on top of the latest trends is so crucial for our brand,” said Yellow Strawberry co-owner Caroline Behan, who has been in the industry for 38 years.
A leader in the salon industry, Yellow Strawberry prides itself on exceeding its clients’ expectations. The salon’s team of 55 highly trained stylists possesses a passion for advancing their knowledge and experience to the benefit the boutique salon’s clients.
“Educating our team is a top priority,” says Richard Weintraub, Yellow Strawberry co-owner and master stylist of over 40 years. “They are continuously training for everything it takes to become an innovative, knowledgeable and creative stylist.
In addition to advanced training in our French hair cutting system, stylists also receive extensive color training from our skilled educators. This in-depth learning environment ensures that all of our guests receive the best possible experience.”
That was the theme at a color-training day at the Bee Ridge salon recently. If not in the industry, you may have had a difficult time understanding some of the conversations taking place as groups of stylists moved in packs from chair to chair carefully diagnosing client volunteers’ hair. “This one needs a base, a lace, and a double glaze,” said Weintraub as he carefully inspected a client’s hair.
The stylists, and even the salon owners, host and attend multiple trainings like this one every year. Yellow Strawberry also participates in many of the world’s leading styling conferences, including the prestigious Intercoiffure in New York City, an invite-only conference for the top 200 salons in the country.
Most recently, at this Wella color class, the new team got to play and try out the brand’s newest – Illumina and Innosense color and pastel color glazes. Illumina is designed for shine and depth and Innosense is specifically designed for sensitive, previously damaged hair. The formula seals the hair and closes the cuticle, providing more shine and creating less damage than other color treatments. The Illumina color collection includes 32 shades of cool tone colors – with no warm or brassy tones.
Pablo, a regional educator certified color expert with Wella, attended the in-house training and consulted with stylists on each client’s needs and desired outcomes. During the training, several clients volunteered as guinea pigs for consultation, coloring and pastel glazing.
This new color ID system used at Yellow Strawberry allows stylists to utilize a state-of-the-art computer program to formulate and calibrate hair color with precision, making each and every touch up exactly the same.
“Color is a very exact and creative science; you have to know when to use an acid base versus an alkaline base on the individual hair type,” says Richard. “Pastel shades are very in right now from pinks and blues to purples, and this line has those shades as well as several glazes that work well when we don’t want a pastel outcome but want to remove brassiness from the hair.”
Some glazes are less permanent and will wash out in 8 – 10 shampoos. Using a pastel glazing can also cancel out old, bad color.
Balayage, a French word meaning to sweep or to paint, is also a popular and artistic new trend in color that Yellow Strawberry stylists have mastered. The freehand technique requires highlights to be hand painted onto the hair because no foil or meche are used to create the highlights. The method allows for a sun-kissed natural looking hair color with softer, less noticeable regrowth lines.
“With color, we don’t want you to just look good when you walk out the door, we want you to look good in four or six weeks,” says Richard. “We customize our color. If you’re a four-week color client, we treat that differently than a six-week color client.”
Earlier this month, a group of 24 Yellow Strawberry stylists attended five days of Sassoon training classes in Miami on the French hair cutting system and precision cutting.
“Our stylists are learning to be more dynamic,” says Caroline. “We want them to know how to keep up with the trends to accommodate our clients and stay ahead of the game. You have to be really disciplined to create the beautiful shapes of today, and we help our stylists hone their skills and technique.”Read More
Let’s face it, we are all product junkies. We couldn’t stop buying products even if we tried! Every year Bumble & Bumble, Kérastase and Jane Iredale launch new, amazing products, and we try them ALL. Every. Time. So for those of you that don’t get to play with hair products all day, (seriously, you should come work with us), here are our current Top 5 products this summer that we absolutely love. Enjoy!
1. Sérum Thérapiste // Kérastase – We get it…it’s summer and we all want is to be blonde! Unfortunately your beautiful sun-kissed highlights may also come with some crispy ends. But not to worry; Kérastase just came out with a miracle in a bottle. This powerful serum goes on damp hair, before you blow dry. It not only protects your hair from heat (up to 450°F!), but also repairs the hair. The double-pump serum compensates for and reactivates missing hair proteins, leaving the hair fiber instantly repaired, reinforced and resurfaced.
2. Bain Fluidealiste // Kérastase – Living in Florida, we deal with humidity and frizz about 105% of the year! This amazing shampoo by Kérastase was just launched the end of last year and we love it. Their idea behind it was very similar to most keratin-like shampoos, but they wanted to maintain the movement in the hair and not weigh it down. The Bain Fluidealiste leaves your hair feeling smooth, light, SHINY and frizz-free. This is a shampoo to definitely check out!
3. Repair Blowdry // Bumble and Bumble – Repair Blowdry is a new favorite at Yellow Strawberry. This baby hit the shelves just last year and we were beyond excited to try it out. (I believe I hit it right on the nose in this earlier post.)
4. Elixir 11 // Yellow Strawberry – Elixir 11 is our favorite leave-in product for the spring and summer time. Whether you’re a beach-goer, a swimmer, or just love being outdoors, this product protects your hair from it all! It prevents dryness, has SPF and is also our most popular detangler for you and your little ones!
5. Thickening Spray // Bumble & Bumble – Last but not least, the product that will be on our Top 5 until the end of time- THICKENING SPRAY! If you have yet to try Bumble & Bumble’s Thickening Spray, You. Are. CRAZY. This amazing product has been around since 1980 and we hope it never, ever goes away. Thickening Spray gives the hair that extra ooomph you’ve always wanted. On top of the amazing fullness, it also has heat protective and moisturizing agents to protect and condition the hair.
Stay tuned for our new Top 5 when we get into the fall season!
